Why you should visit Loch Ness in the Autumn?

Loch Ness and the surrounding area is beautiful at any time of the year but autumn really does bring out the best in the landscape, animals and scenery.

Loch Ness 360 Trail

The majority of Loch Ness and the surrounding area can be explored via the Loch Ness 360 trail. And we recommend Autumn as the ideal time to explore - the landscape is at its most colourful, there are fewer people around and hopefully by that time, the midges have gone!!!

Explore all six sections or simply sample parts. Whatever areas you choose to explore, we can guarantee that Autumn in the Highlands is an unforgettable experience.

Loch Ness Cruising

View the colourful shoreline from a different angle - Jacobite Cruises in Dochgarroch and Cruise Loch Ness in Fort Augustus offer water touring experiences. One the best places to see autumn leaves in all their glory and if you are lucky you may even spot Nessie.

Deer Rutting Season

After Nessie, our nations most famous land mammal is deer and Autumn marks the start of the mating season. What’s makes this time of year is the resulting battles between stags for the female attention. During the dramatic battles, the stags roar and lock antlers in an exhausting feat. Consequently, they can lose up to 20% of their body weight. If you are lucky, from September to early November, you can hear the sounds of this battle as it commences as you are unlikely to see it.

The Great Glen Way

Connecting east and west Scotland, The Great Glen Way leads you through some of Scotland’s most beautiful scenery. Whether you walk run or cycle it and are guaranteed to have an experience of a lifetime.

Taking on the higher north side of Loch Ness 360 trail, you get magnificent views of the Autumn scenery and Loch Ness below. Trees the colour of gold surround the shoreline and river, wrapping themselves along the picturesque pathways, making this one of the best Autumn destinations in Scotland.
